Fishing: Blue Marlin Alley is famous for the number and size of fish found in these waters especially during August and September.

Different fish run at different times of year and moon phases. Trolling we might catch: yellow and black fin tuna, mahi mahi, sailfish, wahoo, bonito and king fish.

Bottom fishing we might catch yellow tail snappers, groupers, and tarpon. We have 4 poles with lures for trolling, although guests are encouraged to bring their own "secret weapon" lures. We have hand lines (yo-yos) for bottom fishing and provide cut bait or squid.

Because parts of Culebra are Marine Preserves we like to troll out in the Virgin Passage and around the Cayos of the Cordilleras. We bottom fish at Luis Peña, Soldiers Point in Culebra and all the south coast anchorages in Vieques.

Snorkeling: As Culebra and Vieques do not have rivers to cloud the waters with silt, just about everywhere has spectacular snorkeling.

After we anchor Carousel we will fit everyone with complete sets of premium snorkel equipment and we will enter the world of clear calm waters. We will be visiting formations of brain, elkhorn, and soft corals, always on the lookout for the flamingos tongues on the purple sea fans.

The colorful reef fish to look for are the shy squirrel fish, the floating clouds of blue tangs, puffers, red hinds often are hiding under the rock ledges, and the beautiful parrot fish of rainbow colors are everywhere.

We might even get to see a few squid and have a curious barracuda as escort. Our favorite sites are easy swims and stress free and we provide float rings and escort you at all times. We are always are on the look out for Conch and Helmet shells which we photograph and return to their home in the Sea.

After we return to Carousel we look thru the shell and fish cards and books so we can identify our new fish friends and be on the lookout for them the next time we enter their world.

Birds: The 23 offshore Islets around Culebra were declared a bird preserve in 1909 and every spring are crowded with migratory birds nesting.

We can expect to see terns, boobies, tropic birds with their beautiful breeding plumage, and the laughing gulls.

All year long we see osprey, blue, white and night herons, red tail hawks, wood ducks, egrets and pelicans in the bird rich mangrove lagoons.

If we are really lucky we might see the small key deer.

Culebrita (little Culebra) is part of the Wildlife preserve and only 3 miles sailing from either Dakity Reef or the anchorage of Pela.

This Island offers two - mile long white sand crescent beaches. We will anchor in Tortuga Cove in 12 feet of crystal clear water and as the name suggests we will be visited by many sea turtles who are curious to see who is visiting their home.

The lee coastline is great for beach combing and watching the cruise ships and freighter traffic using the Virgin Passage. Many wonderful and scenic hiking trails tempt us to explore further and then we can cool off in the natural salt water baths or dive into the crystal clear waters.

Culebrita is also home to the Caribbean's 2nd oldest lighthouse. At a height of 305 feet it offers spectacular scenery and excellent photography looking across to the US Virgin Islands of St. Thomas and St. Johns to the east and a little further over Tortola and Jost Van Dyke in the British Virgin Islands and we can see Vieques to the South stretching away to the Puerto Rican Mainland.

Luis Peña Island in Culebra
- We just love this Island!

And after being serenaded by the Humpback Whales (listen Here) in February while at anchor, we will be returning time and time again.

Accessible only by boat, and having the romantic Honeymoon beach, we can snorkel on the wreck of the Karma in 25 feet of water, enjoy some great night fishing for grouper and grunts, beachcomb, and as the sun sets we will watch for the first flash from the lighthouse on Cabo San Juan 22 miles away in Fajardo.

On the very southwest tip of Culebra Island is Soldiers Point-

Green sea turtles feed in the sea grass around this anchorage and 2 or 3 are usually sited. Not seen as often, the hawks bill turtles also call this cove home.

Also a great place for bottom fishing with blue runners, Spanish mackerel and snappers caught right off the boat.

The best place for spotting the elusive green flash as the sun sets and we enjoy our happy hour party.

Vieques East Point is 10 miles of trade wind sailing away and we round the point and overnight in the totally secluded anchorages of Salinas, Salinas Del Sur or Ensenada Honda.

With no shore lights closer than 20 miles, these anchorages are the spot for watching the night sky and star watching. In these southern latitudes we see the Southern Cross, the False Cross, Orion, the 7 sisters of Pleides and the constellation of Scorpio.

We have 2 wreck sites in under 20 feet of water for some fun snorkeling and great underwater photography.

On the shore we see the tanks and planes left from the Navy bombing maneuvers during the past 40 years.

Now returned to the people of Vieques, this undeveloped and secluded area will soon be developed, so now is the time to visit this pristine beauty.

A day sail away we can anchor in Sun Bay in Vieques and make reservations with the Bio-Bay conservation group for the night time tour in kayaks of the Bioluminescent Bay - this is best seen on the darkest sky nights - no full moons.
